Former Manchester City and England Under-21 goalkeeper Nicky Weaver has joined Preston on trial.

Weaver, who was released by Charlton earlier in the summer, is expected to start North End's friendly against Wrexham on Tuesday night.

Manager Alan Irvine told the club's official website: "We've had the opportunity to bring Nicky Weaver in to do a bit of training and to play a game so we've decided to take that."

He added: "Everybody knows he's a proven goalkeeper at this level and Premier League level. He's got a very good CV and we'll wait and see what happens over the next week."

An injury to Wayne Henderson means Andrew Lonergan has been the only senior keeper in training since the squad returned from their pre-season training camp in Austria.
