Middlesbrough still hope to push through a £4.5million swoop for defender Sean St Ledger in January despite changing their manager.

The deal to make the 24-year-old Republic of Ireland international's loan move from Preston to the Riverside Stadium permanent was put in place under former boss Gareth Southgate but just seven games into his spell on Teesside, Southgate departed to be replaced by Gordon Strachan.

Strachan said: "He will be staying here. As far as I am concerned, it's done. That's what I have been told, anyway."

St Ledger has become a fixture in the Boro team, starting the last 10 games after making his debut as a substitute in the 3-1 Coca-Cola Championship victory at Sheffield Wednesday on September 15.
