Bury midfielder Damien Allen is to undergo surgery to repair a long-standing groin problem.

Allen joined the Shakers last summer after a trial which also saw him sustain the injury. He was forced to have surgery then and will undergo another operation to correct the problem on Friday.

Allen has yet to make a first-team appearance for Bury and boss Alan Knill said: "Damien has had a recurrence of the same injury and they will now operate again. Unfortunately that's his season over."

He added: "It's been really disappointing for him. This was a really good chance for him, he looked bright and fit over pre-season and he's been very unfortunate with the injury.

"He's not taken it very well and we've given him the week off before he has the operation."
