Charlton manager Phil Parkinson expressed his relief after his promotion-pushing side beat 10-man Southend 2-1 at Roots Hall.

A stoppage-time goal from Kyel Reid secured the three points to move the Addicks into third after Akpo Sodje had cancelled out Matt Paterson's opener.

The Shrimpers saw Jean Francois Christophe sent off for an altercation with Nicky Bailey in the 25th minute.

"It was an important three points for us after losing to Brighton in the week and it was important to get back to winning ways," declared Parkinson.

"Going down to 10 men often galvanises teams and then we conceded a soft goal which was uncharacteristic of Rob Elliot.

"The lads dug him out of a hole with the goals because if that goal had cost us the match it would have been remembered."
