Former Aldershot striker Scott Rendell was on target as Torquay dented the Shots' play-off hopes with a surprise 2-0 win at the EBB Stadium.
Rendell and Elliot Benyon struck in the first half to ease United's relegation fears and end Aldershot's six-match unbeaten run.
It was the hosts that started at a high tempo with Louie Soares stinging the hands of Torquay keeper Michael Poke inside the first minute.
But the Gulls gradually took a grip on the contest and Benyon drilled home in the 17th minute after shrugging off Aaron Brown.
Shortly afterwards keeper Jamie Young palmed a Kevin Nicholson free-kick onto the bar as Torquay took control.
And their dominance was rewarded after 36 minutes when Rendell bundled home after a Chris Zebroski cross caused confusion.
Town boss Kevin Dillon threw on all three substitutes but the home side failed to carve out any clear-cut opportunities, with Rendell going close again late on.
