Rochdale have turned down an offer from Middlesbrough for defender Craig Dawson.

Dawson, 20, emerged as a key figure at Spotland this season as Keith Hill's side secured promotion from League Two.His performances attracted admiring glances from a host of higher-placed clubs, most notably Boro.

Chairman Chris Dunphy told Dale's official website: "I can confirm the club has had an offer for Craig Dawson from Middlesbrough but it falls way short of our valuation."

He added: "We aren't a greedy club and our valuation of Craig's worth is in line with the current transfer dealing climate. I don't need to spell out Craig's qualities or sell them to anyone, he's been named the best player in the division and those who saw him play last season know just what a good footballer he is.

"There is interest in Craig from other clubs and we have always said we won't stand in any players' way, but if a deal is to be done then it'll be done first and foremost in the best interests of Rochdale Football Club."
