Former Exeter midfielder Neil Saunders has been forced to retire from professional football at the age of just 27.

Saunders was released by the Grecians last month after a succession of bad knee injuries restricted him to just 24 appearances since joining the club in the summer of 2007.

After considering the avenues open to him, Saunders announced his retirement from the game on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Craig McAllister, who was also released by Exeter in May, has penned a one-year contract with Blue Square Premier side Crawley.
