Northampton Correspondent: Trio of former Coventry stars give Town major boost

With three former Sky Blues players in the current Northampton Town squad, speculation is rife that the Cobblers are using Coventry City as their feeder club.
In all seriousness, it is great to see that the Cobblers are able to attract the calibre of such players with a wealth of Championship experience. Indeed Marcus Hall has played in the Premier League and even captained the England Under 21s back in 1996-97.
So what esteemed talents do the Cobblers now have at their disposal?
Marcus Hall
The first thing anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting him says about Marcus is that he is one of football’s genuine “nice guys”. To say I am thrilled that he has signed for Northampton is an understatement and, whilst it is often hard to get too excited about signing a defender, in this case it is a big boost to the club.
He brings experience, desire and commitment to the Cobblers at a time when these qualities are desperately needed: he made his debut in 1994 in the Premier League and, at the time of writing, has made 349 league appearances for Coventry (twice), Nottingham Forest, Stoke and Northampton.
If he can just keep free from injury he will be a very good player for the Cobblers. However, I understand he is now out for a month with a pulled hamstring – let’s hope this is not a bad omen for the season.
Kevin Thornton
In a word, Kevin is an "enigma". One of those rare players who has genuine natural talent and who can change the course of a game with a moment of genius. Kevin could certainly be the man to fire the Cobblers to League One. If, and only if, he can keep focused on his football, string a long run of games together and avoid off-field “distractions” then he has the potential to make this a season to remember.
He has already shown the fans glimpses of being back to his brilliant best and maybe the game at Anfield will be his platform to shine!
Liam Davis
In a way I am most excited about Liam of the three ex-Coventry players. He has a good touch on the ball, can beat his full back and get behind defences – the final ball sometimes leaves a lot to be desired but again, progress is certainly being made here. Again, if he can keep injury free and get a good run of games under his belt, he can provide the ammunition for the strikers to score goals.
