Adams: We could have lost

Port Vale manager Micky Adams thought his side were lucky to grab a point in their goalless draw with Gillingham.

Vale conceded top spot to Chesterfield in npower League Two but it could have been worse as Tony Sinclair saw his header cleared off the line and Mark Bentley was twice denied by the woodwork.

Adams said: "We give honest assessments at this football club and we didn't play well. Too many players had off days and we didn't play at anything like the tempo we produced early in the season. There were one or two opportunities for us in the second half, but there was only really one team who were going to win the game and that was Gillingham."

He added: "Too many of our players have had a confidence crisis since we hit the top and it's difficult to explain.

"But footballers are only human beings and we've just got to keep working hard and get through it.

"We had to scrap out a point and we will need more of the same until we come out the other side. I know a confident Port Vale side are a good side, but we didn't look anything like a good side."
