An extraordinary week in the life of Manchester United ended with a very ordinary performance at Stoke but Javier Hernandez's double earned them a first away win of the season in the Barclays Premier League as the Potters were beaten 2-1.
United must have been glad to get back to playing football following a week which saw Wayne Rooney first declare his intent to leave the club and then sign a new five-year deal but they rarely got out of first gear at the Britannia Stadium.
Hernandez put them ahead with a 27th-minute header but after Gary Neville escaped a red card Tuncay came off the bench to curl in a fabulous equaliser. However Hernandez still found time to poke in a late winner which closed the gap on leaders Chelsea to just five points.
