Former Toon boss issues Carroll warning

Former Newcastle manager Glenn Roeder has warned striker Andy Carroll he needs to improve his lifestyle if he wants to fulfil his potential.

Carroll has been a revelation as Newcastle have made a steady start to life back in the Barclays Premier League and is being tipped to win a place in Fabio Capello's England squad for the forthcoming friendly with France, but off-field controversy continues to dog the 21-year-old.

And Roeder, who gave Carroll his Newcastle debut in 2007, told Radio Five Live: "I am sure (Newcastle manager) Chris (Hughton) will tell you how hard he works every day in training to make himself a better player but by living the way he is he will not fulfil his potential that he could possibly fulfil by having a bit of a quieter life."

Last month, he pleaded guilty to common assault and was fined £1,000, plus £2,500 compensation, after an altercation with a man in a nightclub, having also been ordered to stay with Magpies captain Kevin Nolan by magistrates in Hexham under bail conditions set after he was charged with assaulting an ex-girlfriend.

There were more lurid newspaper reports of off-field excesses facing Carroll on Sunday.

Roeder added: "Andy needs to realise that (about having a quieter life) if he wants to get to where I'm sure he does want to get to, because he is ambitious.

"He is a great lad around the training ground, a really good lad, coaches love working with him."
