Chelsea have earmarked a move for Manchester City defender Joleon Lescott should they fail to land Benfica's David Luiz, according to the Daily Mail.

The West London club are desperate to bring in a centre-half in January and have reportedly made bids for Luiz without success.

It is reported that Lescott would be Chelsea's second choice should a deal for Luiz fail and he has often been a substitute or only a starter in Europa League games for City this season.

Chelsea would only want to offer around £8.5million for the 28-year-old England international as they are wary of his knee problems.

Lescott started his career at Wolves before a £5million move to Everton in 2006 and subsequently moved on to Eastlands for £22million in 2009.

After representing England at Under 18/20/21 levels, he made his senior debut against Estonia in 2007 under Steve McLaren and has gone on to win 12 caps since.
