Manchester United first team coach René Meulensteen has confirmed the club's top goalkeeper target.

SirAlex Ferguson has been given plenty of warning from current No.1 Edwin Van der Sar, who has revealed that he will be retiring from his position as Manchester United goalkeeper at the end of the season.

The search has already begun for the Old Trafford outfit as they search for the Dutch international's replacement, and Manchester United appear to have turned to their current stopper's compatriot.

"(Maarten) Stekelenburg is indeed the goalkeeper who is at the top of our wanted list. We have naturally been talking a lot among ourselves about who should replace Van der Sar," said Meulensteen, referring to the Ajax stopper.

"Alex Ferguson has spoken about Stekelenburg with Edwin and that does not seem strange to me at all.”

It is thought that Manchester United would have to pay in the region of £10 million to bring the Amsterdam Arena goalkeeper to the club.

A talented 28-year-old, Stecklenberg would provide Manchester United with experience at both domestic and international level whilst offering plenty more years of service.

Rene Adler, Manuel Neuer and Hugo Lloris are also thought to be United targets, but it appears Ferguson has already picked his prime one at Old Trafford.
