As Manchester United are inundated with an injury list spanning 11 players, sources say Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to sell Michael Owen to Aston Villa in favour of finding a player with less injury concerns.

Owen has made just six appearances for Manchester United this season, with injury keeping the 32-year-old on the sidelines for large parts of the campaign. Aston Villa could look to rejuvenate the player, who is desperate for first team football.

The ageing striker is currently the sixth leading goal scorer at Old Trafford, and Sir Alex Ferguson is said to be at the end of his tether with Owen, and is ready to replace the ex-Real Madrid star with a younger player who won’t be sidelined for prolonged periods with injury.

Aston Villa manager Gerard Houllier has been a fan of Owen since the two worked together at Liverpool, and sources say he is planning on approaching Ferguson in the summer to organise a deal.

Were Owen to move to Villa Park, it would provide the chance to pair the former England international alongside Emile Heskey, his old foil from the international scene a decade ago.
