Burnley boss Eddie Howe has paid tribute to Graham Alexander as he prepares to make his 1,000th career appearance.

The veteran utility player, 39, stands just one game away from joining Tony Ford as the only outfield player in English football history to reach five figures. Goalkeepers Peter Shilton, Ray Clemence and Pat Jennings are the only other members of this elite club.

With successive home games against Swansea and Middlesbrough, Howe is especially keen for Alexander to reach the milestone at Turf Moor. Howe said: "Fingers crossed Graham will make his appearance and nobody deserves the 1,000 more than him, both for his application and professionalism."

He added: "He's shown that for a number of years now and everyone is just waiting for the moment."
