Bristol Rovers chairman Nick Higgs has confirmed negotiations with the club's new manager are at an advanced stage.

The Pirates have opted against giving Stuart Campbell the job on a permanent basis after the midfielder failed to steer the side clear of relegation, despite winning four and drawing three of their final 12 games.

"Things are progressing well and the negotiations are drawing to a conclusion," Higgs told the club's official website.

"I would have liked to be in a position to make an announcement by now, but we must try to make the right appointment for the club as it is crucial we have the right man in place.

"I hope to be able to give you all the news in the very near future."
