Hugo Rodallega rose to head Wigan to Barclays Premier League survival as Roberto Martinez's men rode their luck to extend their stay in the top-flight with a 1-0 win at Stoke.
Wigan looked dismal in a nervy first period in which Jermaine Pennant and Kenwyne Jones forced good saves out of Ali Al-Habsi in the Latics goal.
But a much improved second half performance was capped in the 79th minute when Rodallega jumped to meet a Mohamed Diame cross and head the priceless winner.
