Liverpool are on the verge of completing a deal for Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy.

The 20-year-old has been the shining light in a struggling Latics side, who avoided relegation on the final day of the season with victory at Stoke City.

And with Chelsea also interested, Liverpool are keen to push the deal, which could be worth £10 million, through as soon as possible.

“It is 90 per cent done, all sides now seem to accept it is going to happen and it's a matter of everyone trying to get the best deal,” a source told Goal.com.

“Liverpool have shown the most interest for quite a while and have convinced him that it will be the best move to fulfil his potential,” the source added.

Having already rejected a move to Liverpool in 2009, McCarthy has flourished at Wigan under Roberto Martinez.

A deal for McCarthy may not be the only piece of business The Reds do with Wigan, with Charles N'Zogbia also linked with a move.
