Liverpool pair Luis Suarez and Dirk Kuyt both found the net as Uruguay beat Netherlands on penalties in Montevideo.

The Reds' January acquisition struck with 10 minutes remaining, and looked to have helped Uruguay exact revenge for their World Cup semi-final defeat at the hand of Netherlands.

But the Oranje struck in the first minute of stoppage time when Kuyt headed in, sending the friendly contest into penalties.

Arsenal striker Robin van Persie and Eljero Elia both missed for the Dutch, allowing Alvaro Pereira to convert the winning spot kick to secure a win for the team who finished fourth in the World Cup last year.

Suarez missed out playing Netherlands at last summer's World Cup after being sent off for deliberate handball in the quarter-final against Ghana.
