There may not be an abundance of football betting markets to get stuck into this summer given the lack of World Cup or senior European Championships, but one thing that’s guaranteed is the now annual drawn out transfer saga.
The latest footballer whose future destination is currently the subject of tabloid gossip and football betting markets is 19-year-old Brazilian striker Neymar, with the youngster caught in the middle of a Chelsea-Real Madrid tug of war.
The forward caused quite a stir earlier this year when he scored twice against Scotland in a friendly at Wembley only to become embroiled in a racism row after a German student bizarrely flung a banana skin onto the pitch for lack of a compost heap near his seat.
Those keeping an eye on South American football will also have seen Neymar in electrifying form in this year’s Copa Libertadores. The Santos front man has scored a hatful of goals and several assists and will be expected to star in Wednesday night’s final second leg against Uruguayan outfit Penarol.
Chelsea were until recently hoping to secure the Brazilian’s services for around €30million without having to trigger his €45milion buy-out clause. Yet former boss Jose Mourinho and Real Madrid are now flexing their financial clout and mooting a possible €40million switch to the Bernabeau.
Neymar himself has not been overly clear on his intentions having stated that he would like to move to England but that he would also like to stay in Brazil for another year.
In the meantime he is almost certainly set to be included in Brazil’s Copa America squad this summer, in which he is the second favourite behind Lionel Messi to finish as top scorer, and it’ll be no surprise if both he and Santos decide to delay a decision until after the tournament has finished.
Much to the anguish of Chelsea and Real Madrid fans hoping for a quick summer signing.
