Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas believes that the Blues are competing in a six horse race, with the 22-year-old citing his top rivals for a first season in charge at Stamford Bridge.

There are so many strong teams," Villas-Boas said.

"You see the way Tottenham are playing, the ambitions and the revolution at Manchester City, Arsenal's hunger for success and the way last season slipped away from them - for sure, Mr Wenger will provoke them to respond in every fixture.

"The way United go about their business. They are not here to play, They are here to be successful.

"Even Liverpool, with the arrival of Dalglish mid-season, the way he built and revived Liverpool, just missing out on the Uefa Cup spot.

"Big, big challenges lie ahead for us, and that is what we want to face."

Chelsea just missed out on the title last season after making a stunning comeback from their lull in form over the new year. United pipped the Blues to the domestic trophy, effectively sealing Carlo Ancelotti’s exit from the club, and Villas-Boas has said he understands he is expected to win trophies in his first season.

And with five big teams to compete against rather than the old days of a two horse race, the new Chelsea manager will no doubt be looking at making some big signings this summer as he rebuilds an aging squad.
