Robins boss happy to bide his time

Swindon manager Paolo Di Canio is still intent on bringing several new faces to The County Ground before their Npower League Two season kicks off, but will not be rushed in to any decisions.

The Robins’ pre-season is in full flow with the team registering a 5-0 win against a Marche XI during their Italian tour. Although looking impressive, Di Canio is keen to add to the squad.

Speaking to the club’s official website he said: “We know we need more players and we are working hard on that. We don't want to make quick decisions on players because they need to be able to settle into the squad and be a part of what we are trying to achieve.”

Town face a difficult season after being relegated last year and Di Canio’s target is to bounce straight back up. The West Ham legend wants to create a close-knit group of players that can keep together for the entire season.

"The season ahead will be very tough. We know that each player won't play 46 games but I hope that several players will play 40 games or so. The club is totally behind what we are trying to do and we aim to complete the squad within the next few weeks."


 

Di Canio has certainly been true to his word as Swindon have announced the signing of Grimsby Town striker Alan Connell - subject to a medical. The deal, thought to be a six-figure sum, comes soon after the Robins lost out to Gillingham in a deal for Welsh striker Adam Birchall.

Connell impressed at Blundell Park last season scoring 25 league goals for the Mariners and 29 in all competitions. The player has won promotion to League 1 on three separate occasions and Town fans will be hoping he makes that four this season.
