A howler by Aldershot keeper Jamie Young cost his side a second successive home league defeat as Torquay won 1-0.

Young somehow contrived to let Gulls midfielder Lee Mansell's harmless-looking first-half strike slip between his legs as the Devon club continued their unbeaten start to the league campaign.

The Shots had started the brighter of the two sides but lacked a cutting edge in front of goal as Luke Guttridge and Michael Rankine both spurned presentable opportunities.

Torquay grew into the game and Young had already tipped behind Taiwo Atieno's clever flick when he allowed Mansell's speculative 25-yarder to squirm underneath him in the 36th minute.

Shots striker Peter Vincenti nearly found the perfect response on the stroke of half-time but his back-post header clipped the post and went wide.

After the break Torquay threatened briefly before shutting up shop and holding off the inevitable Aldershot onslaught. But the Shots continued to misfire in front of goal as first Danny Hylton and then Aaron Brown failed to do better when they found space in the box and the Gulls held on for the win.
