Everton and Celtic are both battling for the signing of Birmingham City defender Liam Ridgewell, according to skysports.com

Ridgewell is likely to leave a depleted Birmingham this summer following their relegation from the Barclays Premier League last season.

And two of the candidatures to sign the defender are Everton, who may require replacement for Phil Jagielka if he moves to Arsenal, and Celtic who are looking to add some steel to their defence in their pursuit of the SPL title.

Everton's financial problems are well known, but money could be available if Jagielka leaves for Arsenal, and Ridgewell would represent a low cost addition.

Celtic are desperate to replace Emilio Izaguirre, who broke his leg at the start of the season.

Neil Lennon showed his distain after Celtic were beaten by Dunfermline at the weekend, while Everton were also beaten in their first game of the season, by newly promoted Queens Park Rangers.
