Newcastle made an offer for Papiss Cisse, but it was not enough to secure the striker from Freiburg, according to the club’s sporting director.

Dirk Dufner insisted that while talks took place over a move, with the offer being made so late, there was no chance to find a replacement for Dufner and not enough money was offered for the side to be swayed.

"For starters, Newcastle United's offer was not high enough in our opinion and secondly, it was impossible for us to adequately deal with his departure so short for the transfer window closed," Dufner told Kicker.

Newcastle failed to land a striker on deadline day, after deals with Bryan Ruiz and Modibo Maiga fell through. The club issued a statement a few days after the transfer window closed insisting that they weren’t going to make any last minute knee jerk reactions to losing out on their top targets.

Cicce is said to have a £14 million release clause in his contract but Newcastle bid £7 million for the former Metz forward, according to Yahoo Sport.
