A first career goal from 17-year-old Jonathan Williams sent Wigan spinning to a surprise 2-1 Carling Cup defeat by Crystal Palace.
The npower Championship side were already leading through Darren Ambrose's strike when rookie midfielder Williams crashed in a memorable second from the edge of the area.
Wigan, showing seven changes from the side beaten 3-0 by Manchester City on Saturday, pulled one back in stoppage time through former Eagle Ben Watson but Palace held out to secure a third-round visit from Middlesbrough.
