Finnish international Mika Vayrynen has signed a one-year deal with Leeds United, with the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.

The 29-year-old, who has won 54 caps for his country, has joined the Npower Championship club after becoming available on a free transfer from Dutch club Heerenveen.

Whites boss Simon Grayson is happy to have signed the experienced midfielder, beating a handful of clubs across Europe to land the player.

“We’re delighted to sign Mika. There were good offers from other clubs on the continent, but he has turned them down because of his ambition to play for Leeds and be successful here," said Grayson.

“He can play as an attacking midfielder or as a holding midfielder and he’s delighted to get the opportunity to come here.”

Vayrynen has played for Dutch giants PSV Eindhoven in the past, and has also scored five goals in 54 international appearances for Finland.

He will have the company of compatriot Mikael Forssell at Elland Road.
