Zlatan Ibrahimovic inspired AC Milan to a 2-0 win over Viktoria Plzen last night, with the striker making a stunning comeback from injury that contributed to the Serie A side staying close to Barcelona in group H.
Milan are currently at the top of their Champions League group stage table, with four points from two games and above Barcelona on away goal difference.
And while Ibrahimovic contributed one of the two goals in the win last night, with a 53rd minute penalty kick, the 29-year-old also set up Antonio Cassano to close down the game with a second goal for Milan just 13 minutes later.
And manager Massimilano Allegri praised his star shooter, admitting he is hopeful that Ibrahimovic can pull off a similar performance in Milan’s match up with Barcelona.
“Ibra had a good comeback, he played well and helped the team. He gives us a physical presence; he's technical, has important qualities and he's a point of reference,” Allegri said.
“I'm happy with how he played, given he hadn't played for a while. Winning is never easy. Tonight we did it our way.
“They were organised and did well on the counter-attack, attacking with five men. Over time I think it will come down to the Barca match, but we'll see and take it one game at a time.”
Milan face Barcelona on November 23, in what will no doubt be one of the top class match-ups of the Champions League group stages. Both sides are vying for top position in their groups to win a favourable draw for the round of 16.
