Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala have confirmed that they will chase Robin van Persie and Nicolas Anelka in the January transfer period, with the Russian giants keen to make their squad capable of challenging for European honours.

Speculation has surrounded a possible move for Anelka to the club, who have signed Samuel Eto’o for a world record wage of more than £250,000 a week.

And while Anelka looks set to leave Chelsea in search of more game time, caretaking manager Roberto Carlos says the Blues star is not the only big player on the Russian side’s transfer wishlist.

"Anelka is not the only player. Nene from PSG and Van Persie from Arsenal are players we are following," Carlos told TV show Canal Football Club.

Van Persie’s contract with Arsenal runs out in two years, and the Gunners have yet to agree an extension with the striker.

And after a particularly disappointing start to the season, Arsenal could go a seventh season without a trophy, leaving Van Persie vulnerable to offers from other clubs.

Chelsea won’t be as lost without Anelka as Arsenal will be without Van Persie, but Chelsea will no doubt hold onto their star for a maximum transfer fee, one which Russian billionaire Suleyman Kerimov will be able to afford.
