Arsenal made £16m mistake, says former boss

George Graham believes that Andrey Arshavin was a ‘poor buy’ for Arsenal, and claims that his £16 million could have been spent on building the Gunners’ midfield with players who can deliver under pressure.

Earlier this week, Arshavin admitted himself that he hasn’t been satisfied with his performances of late, telling reporters: "They [the fans] should expect some more tricks, goals and unbelievable passes. To be honest, I am still expecting more from me as well."


 

And now Graham, who managed Arsenal for nine years in the 1980s and 90s, insists that the Russia international was a bad investment by the Gunners, when Arshavin moved to the club in 2009 for £16 million.

"Arshavin’s been a poor buy, his enthusiasm doesn’t seem to be there,” Graham told Talksport.

“[Against Marseille], and in the past, he’s looked like he doesn’t want to be there. When he pulls that shirt on he’s not been good enough for me.”

Arsenal suffered a big loss in their midfield department this summer, with Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri both making for the exit doors.

And while Arsenal’s defence has also been a huge problem this season, Arshavin hasn’t been able to pick up the slack for the departed playmakers.
