Gael Givet’s 120th minute winner helped end Newcastle United’s unbeaten record and send the Barclays Premier League’s bottom club Blackburn Rovers into the last-eight.

Ruben Rochina and Yakubu looked to have sent Rovers through in normal time, but Danny Guthrie and Yohan Cabaye’s stoppage time goals took the tie to extra time.

Morton Gamst Pedersen’s deflected free-kick put the hosts back ahead, before Peter Lovenkrands’s penalty looked to have taken the game to penalties.

But Givet’s goal in the dyeing embers of extra-time gives Steve Kean a much needed win.

At Goodison Park, Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge pounced with four minutes of extra time remaining to beat Everton after an action packed evening.

Nicolas Anelka and Leighton Baines’s missed penalties sandwiched Salomon Kalou fortunate opener.

With The Blues down to ten-men due to Ross Turnbull’s involvement in Everton’s penalty, the home side dictated and Louis Saha equalised with seven minutes of normal time left.

But after Royston Drenthe’s dismissal, Andre Villas-Boas’s side took control and another mistake from Jan Mucha, who earlier flapped at Kalou’s weak effort, only parried Florent Malouda’s shot from range, only for Sturridge to stroke home.
