Fernando Torres says he has a debt to pay to Chelsea fans for the faith they have shown in him during a somewhat difficult start to his Stamford Bridge career.

The 27-year-old took 903 minutes to find the net after joining Chelsea from Liverpool for £50 million in January and has only five goals for the Blues.

He does, however, have the support of the Chelsea management, players and fans alike to recapture the form that prompted Roman Abramovich to break the bank to sign him.

And, in return, Torres has promised the Stamford Bridge faithful that he will always endeavour to repay them with his best efforts.

"All that I need to do, above anything else, is to work," Torres told the Daily Mirror.

"If you work and give everything and really want to do something, that is all you can be asked.

"If you do that and things do not work out, you have nothing to be ashamed of.

"But I am in debt to the Chelsea fans. They have always supported me.

"And I promise them the one thing I have never done and will never do in my life is give up."

The Spain international concedes he has reached nowhere near the heights he hit at Anfield but is confident he can find the goalscoring touch that made him one of Europe's most feared forwards.

"Whenever you go somewhere new, you expect to have difficulties," he added.

"But whenever I have had difficult times, I look at myself and say, 'Yes, I can get back to my level.'"
