Liverpool cult hero Gary McAllister thinks Steven Gerrard’s fitness is the key to getting Kenny Dalglish’s side firing on all cylinders again.
The Anfield outfit have been struggling to find the net in the past couple of months and McAllister believes the return on their captain can turn this around.
Liverpool are currently just outside the top four and have slipped behind their rivals slightly in recent weeks, but McAllister feels time will help improve their record.
“I think since Kenny’s come back, there’s been an obvious improvement,” he told the Liverpool Echo.
“I think there’s been some big signings during the summer – like everything else they need time to settle.
“Stewart Downing has been a great addition, Charlie Adam is a player I really admire, it just takes time for these players to gel in to the Liverpool way but there’s no better teacher than Kenny Dalglish.”
As well as feeling Liverpool have improved under Dalglish, McAllister believes the experience of Gerrard has been missed by the new signings.
“I think the one thing that’s missing from the midfield is the leadership of Steven Gerrard. I think Henderson, Adam and Downing would have benefited if the captain had been there, to lead by example,” he added.
“It’s just been a wee bit unfortunate that during their brief period at the club the captain has been missing.”
Kop legend Gerrard has been restricted to just four appearances this season due to a groin injury and ankle infection.
Gary McAllister was signed by Gerard Houllier and became an important part of the squad that won a famous cup treble in 2001.
