Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois says he wants to spend a second season on loan at Athletico Madrid in order to gain valuable experience before returning to Stamford Bridge.

After being signed from Genk during the summer, Courtois was loaned out to the La Liga outfit to gain further experience, with Petr Cech expected to be unmoved in the Blues goal.

Courtois has been tipped to eventually take over from Cech, 29, but the stopper wants to build on his 23 Athletico appearances.

"I am very happy at Atletico and I am living a good experience," he told Marca.

"I would like to stay here one more year and I said this to Chelsea's manager [Andre Villas-Boas] on Sunday."

The 19-year-old £8 million addition Courtois said earlier this season that Chelsea were worried over Cech's injury problems.

"Chelsea’s goalkeeping coach told me he doesn’t know how much time Cech can play at the top level," he said in October.

"I know he has problems in his knees and on his back.

"Chelsea told me to spend two years at a club like Atletico. After that one season in an English team so I can integrate myself into the Premier League."
