Former Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas was a target for Liverpool prior to the full-time appointment of Kenny Dalglish last summer, it has been claimed.

The Portuguese was riding high after a season of unprecendented success with Porto this time last year, and many expected Villas-Boas would leave the club for a more prominent position.

And so it transpired as the 34-year-old joined Chelsea to replace Carlo Ancelotti, who had been relieved from his duties at Stamford Bridge after failing to follow up the Double success of the previous season with any silverware.

But Villas-Boas only lasted eight months with the Blues before he was sacked by Roman Abramovich, and Chelsea have won the FA Cup and made the final of the Champions League since his departure.

Anfield, however, could have been Villas-Boas' destination had Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group decide against promoting Dalglish from caretaker boss to full-time manager.

According to the Daily Express, Liverpool held an interest in Villas-Boas before taking the decision to make Dalglish's position a permanent one a year ago this week.
