Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed the news last night that would cheer up the majority of Manchester United’s fans in their darkest hour; Paul Scholes would be returning to play for another season.

Scholes' return from his premature retirement in January provided United with the boost they needed to take the title race down to the last day before they fell agonizingly short.

But how much of an impact did Scholes’ return have on United’s ill-fated title charge? GMF is here to investigate the United legend’s first season back in the game.

21 – appearances made for Manchester United since his return in January, four of which came in the Europa League and the FA Cup.

4 – Goals for Scholes last season – his best return since he bagged six goals during the 2006/07 campaign.

42 – Manchester United dropped just nine points in the 17 league games Scholes featured in.

106 – the amount of Premier League goals Scholes took his tally to when he found the back of the net in the 2-0 win over Swansea on May 6, moving him one short of Ryan Giggs’s 107.

93.1 – Scholes’ pass success percentage, making him the second most accurate passer in the Premier League behind Swansea’s Leon Britton

66.9 – Scholes average passes made per game, putting him sixth in the most prolific passer in the Premier League list this season.

2.3 – On average, Scholes made 2.3 tackles per game for Manchester United this season, which puts him in the top 40 tacklers in the league.

697 – Scholes’ total number of appearances.

14 – Of Scholes' 17 league appearances for Manchester United this season, 14 ended in victory.

3 – Scholes was booked three times during his four month comeback.

1.6 – Scholes committed on average 1.6 fouls per game during his return, a figure that puts him inside the top 20 in the Premier League.

1167 – The amount of minutes played by Scholes in Manchester United’s league games this season.

3 – The position Scholes came in the FWA Player of the year award voting.

9 – Scholes was substituted in nine of his 17 league games for United, while he was a used substitute in three of them.
