Fabregas: I'm happy playing striker

Cesc Fabregas admits he's happy playing as a forward for Spain - because he loves scoring goals.

The Barcelona midfielder's goal against Italy was his first since February, but the makeshift striker hopes he won't have to wait so long next time.

Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was left on the bench as Spain drew 1-1 with Italy, and Spanish coach Vicente Del Bosque opted for six midfielders, including Fabregas and his Barcelona teammates Xavi, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets. Torres did come on in the second half, but squandered two good chances to win the match.

Del Bosque is expected to stick with the same formation against Ireland in Spain's second Group C encounter, and Fabregas is more than happy to lead the line for his country.

"I like scoring goals and I hope it continues for a long time," said Fabregas. "It's a position I've played in a lot with Barcelona. I'm happy there.

"My goal against Italy was my first since February. But I hope I can keep scoring goals. I am still learning. I've been with the national team for seven years and it's true I haven't always played much. But i knew my chance would come."

Fabregas has adapted well to life at Barcelona since his move from Arsenal, although he admits the tactical differences took a while to get used to. And the former-Gunners star is a key part of Del Bosque's side as they look to defend their European Championship trophy.

The reigning champions face Ireland this evening, before their final group match against Croatia on June 18.
