Manchester United were treated to a man of the match performance from summer signing Shinji Kagawa as they beat Shanghai Shenhua 1-0.

The Japanese international scored the only goal of the game mid-way through the second half. In front of 42,000 Chinese fans Kagawa delivered a masterful performance, capped by his right-foot volley into the far corner.

Shanghai Shenhua, who were without Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, struggled to match a United side containing Paul Scholes, Antonio Valencia, Nick Powell and Anderson.

Powell wasted a good chance when put through on goal, dragging his shot wide, and Portuguese winger Bebe produced an excellent cameo performance as a second-half substitute, laying on the assist for Kagawa's goal.

Bebe endured an injury hit season last year, on loan to Besiktas, but after last week's final minute equaliser against Ajax Cape Town and today's impressive showing, the 22-year-old could be working his way into Sir Alex Ferguson's plans for this season.

Likewise, Davide Petrucci, captain of United's reserve side last year, was lively throughout and Andreas Lindegaard continued in net. Considering the intense heat, Sir Alex Ferguson will be pleased with his side's performance.
