Roberto di Matteo has revealed he is relishing the chance to win seven pieces of silverware this season and promised his Chelsea squad would go all out to achieve it.
The Blues start the quest in Sunday’s Community Shield clash with Manchester City at Villa Park and the Italian isn’t concerned about the ability of his squad at Stamford Bridge to cope with a possible fixture pile-up.
Their unexpected Champions League victory now means they will compete for the UEFA Super Cup against Europa League winners Atletico Madrid, as well as going into the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan in December.
“They’re opportunities. When you look at them, it’s great to be involved and you want to win these trophies because they don’t come around very often. That’s how we look at it. We’ll deal with the fixture list,” he said.
In addition to these three, Chelsea will be going for the Premier League, the League Cup, defending the FA Cup and Champions League titles.
Di Matteo could be excused for playing down the possibility of winning all seven, but he insisted the Blues would do all they could to achieve it and urged his squad to pull together to give them the best chance possible to do so.
“We are going to try to win the trophies we’re involved in. It takes a collective effort to achieve that,” he added.
“You have to be able to work with everybody and everybody has to give their best – even if they’re sometimes out of the team.”
Chelsea open up their Premier League campaign against Wigan Athletic on Sunday August 19.
