Sir Alex Ferguson has moved to extinguish speculation that Manchester United are pursuing Porto winger James Rodriguez as the club makes plans for the January transfer window.

Manchester United have consistently been linked with a move for the Colombia international over the past few weeks and were reportedly ready to intensify their interest in the Porto star in the New Year.

Ferguson, however, laughed off suggestions he is preparing a move to bring Rodriguez to Old Trafford when asked about the 21-year-old in a press conference prior to Manchester United's meeting with Braga.

The Manchester United boss said: "As far as James Rodriguez is concerned, I hope it's not true because it costs a fortune to get a player from Porto!"

Should Ferguson change his mind and decide to pursue Rodriguez, he is likely find it tough to secure a deal for the youngster, with Real Madrid also reported to be trailing the Colombian.

Rodriguez spoke last week of his admiration for both Manchester United and Real Madrid, while he has also been compared to current Santiago Bernabeu star Cristiano Ronaldo.
