Former Wales goalkeeper Neville Southall admits it would be a mouthwatering prospect to see compatriot Gareth Bale play in the same Real Madrid side as Cristiano Ronaldo, but says he would prefer the Tottenham star to stay in the Premier League.

Bale has frequently been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid, and recent reports claim Jose Mourinho is ready to bid £50 million next summer in the hope of bringing the Spurs winger to the Santiago Bernabeu.

A combination of Bale and Ronaldo on opposite flanks for Real Madrid would be one to leave defences across the continent quivering in fear, and one that would appear to be a distinct possibility.

Southall would certainly be intrigued to witness Bale and Ronaldo together at Real Madrid, but would rather see the 23-year-old move to Manchester City or Manchester United, when the Wales international inevitably leaves Tottenham.

"Well if you had Cristiano Ronaldo on the right wing and Bale on the left wing that would be some team for Real Madrid, wouldn't it?" Southall told Goal.com.

"Hopefully though he'll just stay in Britain, and Welsh players tend to stay at home a lot, at your Manchester Uniteds and Man Citys, that would probably be better [for him]."

Bale has been in fine form for club and country this season, scoring nine goals in 22 appearances in all competitions.
