Chelsea are prepared to hijack moves by Arsenal and Liverpool for Newcastle United’s in-form striker Demba Ba – if they cannot agree deals for Radamel Falcao or Gonzalo Higuain.
Ba has been tipped for a January transfer window switch to either Emirates Stadium or Anfield, but a report from the Daily Telegraph has suggested Roman Abramovich is tempted to join the race for the Senegal striker.
It says that Ba has a £7million release clause in his current deal with the St James’ Park club and is reluctant to renegotiate it as he would receive £2.5million of it should a club meet the price.
Arsenal are famed for bargain hunting and Ba’s price would be exactly that for a striker that has a proven track record of scoring in the Premier League and is already on ten league goals for the season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool are in desperate need of another senior striker to help Luis Suarez with the centre-forward duties so Ba’s price and pedigree would likely make him an extremely tempting target for boss Brendan Rodgers.
The report claims Chelsea will not risk not buying another striker in January to challenge Fernando Torres for the spot, as they have concerns over whether he will be able to continue the form that has seen him score four in his last two matches.
