Carlisle have confirmed John Ward as their new manager.

Ward will take charge after agreeing a four-year contract with the Cumbrians, who confirmed a "substantial compensation deal" with League One rivals Cheltenham for the former Wolves boss. Ward, 56, replaces Greg Abbott, who has been in caretaker charge of the club since the sacking of Neil McDonald early this season.

A statement from Carlisle read: "The directors wish to record their sincere thanks to Greg Abbott and his team for the caretaker role they have fulfilled over the last 10 games, where they maintained the highest standards both on and off the field."
