David Beckham has priced himself out of a move to AS Monaco because of his extravagant wage demands, reports French sports newspaper L'Equipe.

The 37-year-old midfielder was understood to be an ambitious transfer target for Claudio Ranieri's Ligue 2 side, after he called time on his MLS adventure with LA Galaxy earlier this month.

Negotiations between Monaco and the former England captain's representatives have been ongoing for the past few weeks, but now appear to have reached an impasse, with Beckham unwilling to alter his financial requirements.

Last month, Tor-Kristian Karlsen, Monaco's executive general manager, flew to the United States to meet Beckham personally and discuss his vision for the club, which started with a return to France's top-flight.

And, despite the positive response received from the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star, who remains one of the biggest names in world football, Beckham's contract demands have now been deemed too much for Monaco, even with the backing of Russian owner, Dimitri Rybolovlev.

Providing the club successfully achieves promotion back to Ligue 1, Monaco could renew interest in the free agent in the summer, providing Beckham hasn't already negotiated a deal elsewhere, as he considers his options for the final challenge of his career.
