Manchester United's move for Torino defender Angelo Ogbonna has been put on hold after he sustained a hernia problem that requires surgery, reports talkSPORT.

The 24-year-old has been tracked by the Premier League leaders all season after turning in a series of impressive performances in Italy.

Rated as one of the best defenders in all of Serie A, Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson has been credited with an interest in adding Ogbonna to his Old Trafford ranks, as he looks to strengthen his leaky back line.

Torino have not put a timescale on the Italian international's recovery, but he's likely to be sidelined until the New Year and possibly even past the January transfer window.

However, Manchester United will also be boosted by the return of injured captain Nemanja Vidic, with Ferguson describing his impending comeback as a 'big bonus' to his side's title challenge.

The commanding centre-half has been sidelined since September 19 after being forced to undergo another knee operation, but is now ready to put an injury-ravaged period of his career firmly behind him.
