Alan Shearer has backed former Newcastle and England team-mate Michael Owen to remain on Tyneside next season.
The 27-year-old´s future is the subject of speculation amid reports he could leave St James´ Park for as little as £9million this summer because of a clause agreed when he made his £17million move from Real Madrid in August 2005. However, Shearer is confident Owen will stay.
Asked if he thought the striker would be a Newcastle player at the start of next season, Shearer told BBC1´s Inside Sport programme: "Yes. He wants to get back playing and scoring goals for Newcastle."
