The next man to take up Platini’s mantle could arguably be called the greatest player France has ever produced. His FIFA World Player of the Year awards coincided with him leading Les Bleus to glory in the home World Cup in 1998, the European Championships in 2000 and Real Madrid winning the Champions League in 2002 – the final being memorable for his incredible game-winning volley.
