Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has revealed how Barcelona star Xavi got the hump with him and how he used Cesc Fabregas’ connections to secure one of Lionel Messi’s shirts.
The Gunners talisman was speaking to Match of the Day Magazine when he made the revelation about events after the clash with the Camp Nou side in the 2011 Champions League knockout stages.
A 19-year-old Wilshere announced himself on the European stage that night just over two years ago with a magnificent performance in a memorable comeback 2-1 win for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Pep Guardiola’s team contained such stellar names as Lionel Messi, Andres Iniesta, David Villa and Xavi – Wilshere revealed the latter of those to be none too gracious in defeat when the interviewer asked about shirt swapping that night.
“With Xavi and Messi! They’re on my wall. I asked Xavi but he had the hump, so he threw me his shirt and walked off!” he said.
“I asked Cesc for Messi’s because they’re good mates!”
Arsenal went down 1-0 in the first half of that game to current transfer target Villa, but late goals from Robin van Persie and Andrey Arshavin saw them storm to victory.
However, it was not enough to save them from elimination as Barça won the return leg 3-1 at the Camp Nou
That game featured the controversial sending off of Van Persie and Nicklas Bendtner fluffing his lines when presented with a chance to win the tie from a terrific Wilshere breakaway.
The England international has been impressing since returning from long-term injury this season and will be hoping to go one better in the last 16 this year when Arsenal face Bayern Munich next month.
