Wayne Rooney admits he can’t wait to face Cristiano Ronaldo in tomorrow night’s Champions League last 16 encounter between Manchester United and Real Madrid.

The pair go head-to-head for only the fourth time in their professional careers, with this clash the first in club football following three international meetings between England and Portugal.

And, whilst Rooney was on the losing side in two of those matches, he’ll be hoping for a different result for the Red Devils at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday evening.

“Flying out to Madrid later today, can't wait for tomorrow night. It will be nice to see Ronnie again,” Rooney wrote on his official Facebook page.

Ronaldo spent six years at Old Trafford after signing for Manchester United in 2003. In that time, the Portuguese winger lifted the Champions League trophy after victory against Chelsea in Moscow.

His £80million sale remains a world-record transfer fee, but the 28-year-old is yet to taste European glory once again since his move to the Spanish capital.

Rooney has also lifted the Champions League trophy just once, with United losing two finals against Barcelona since that famous night in May 2008.

And, if the 27-year-old is to repeat the trick at Wembley later this year, then a huge hurdle must be cleared against Los Blancos.
