Roberto Mancini and Sir Alex Ferguson are allegedly in competition to sign Derby County's up-and-coming midfielder Will Hughes.

The Daily Star has revealed that the Championship side turned down a £5million bid from Manchester City for the 17-year-old in the final week of the January transfer window, as the club are holding out for at least £10million.

And, City may face rival bids from Premier League leaders Manchester United when they try another move for the England under-21 international in the summer. Red Devils manager Ferguson is reportedly very interested in the youngster.

However, Hughes is in no rush to leave Pride Park, where he has a contract until 2015.

The 17-year-old broke into the Derby first team last season, and has been a key player for Nigel Clough's side this term, racking up 32 league appearances in the centre of midfield and scoring two goals.

Hughes was an England under-17 regular before making the leap to the under-21s in November last year.
